What happened

I've officially worn them out. Well, the jet lag and I. Mom's back at the hotel and Peter's lying down in my room. I had to get all of this down before the night's done.

Yesterday, I thought that I was going to make it through the day without having to worry about a birthday celebration. Then, at about 5:45, Sandy came in and said that I had an appointment she forgot to tell me about. Of course, I was suspect. Sandy forgets nothing. Plus, she had a look in her eyes that made me think a stripper was going to come through the door and embarrass me in front of her and everyone. Instead, it was my mother and my best friend. Peter was carrying a birthday cake, Mom was carrying presents and the rest of the office crowded in the doorway to sing "Happy Birthday" to me.

I don't know what exactly I did when I saw them. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. They'd never given me any indication that they'd be flying out. Not that it would have been much of a surprise if they had, right? I'm pretty sure I cried a little, and when Peter put the cake down, I hugged him and gave him a kiss that probably lasted for a good five minutes. Mom looked as if she wanted to cry by the time I got to her, and... It was all very, very good.

I was ready to cancel my date with Kevin, but Peter told me I'd better not, so I went out for dinner, confessed it was my birthday and found out that he knew because he'd run my plate and noticed my birthdate. Caught between being creeped out and flattered, I soon chose flattered when he pulled out his present for me. Minds out of the gutter, please. It was a beautiful silver tie clip with a little Pisces symbol on it. Very tasteful, though. I was genuinely touched by the gesture, and he's so sweet and funny and very, very attractive. Mainly, he's sweet and funny. Okay, I went home with him, but didn't spend the night. I wanted to get back to Peter and Mom.

They're staying at the Renaissance, so I called their rooms, woke them up and went over there to have some drinks and hang out. Peter made me tell them everything about my date, including why I was back before midnight, and I ended up staying in Peter's room instead of driving back to my place.

Today, we hit all the tourist spots I could think of, and although I have to go to work tomorrow, I'm planning on taking them around some more over the weekend. Right now, though, I know Mom's getting some rest, and I'd bet money Pete's asleep, too. I'm going to send this and head in there with him. I'd never admit it to him, but it felt really good to sleep next to him, last night, and I'm looking forward to it now. He'd hate it if I ever called him my security blanket, but only because he hates that I feel the need to depend on anyone but myself. Too bad. Tomorrow, I'm calling him "Binky."
