Hey peeps:

This is a heads up about Orli's birthday. In two weeks, he's hitting the big 3-0 and Michael and I are throwing him a surprise birthday party. All the details will be announced later, but this is to warn you that you MUST keep Saturday, January 13th open. If you're not going to be able to attend, you'd better get him an awesome present to make up for missing such an important milestone in his life. I understand that things come up, but you'd better be there if you want to call yourself our friend and don't want me to go all Incredible Hulk on you. I have muscles. Fear them.

Oh my god, I'm so kidding. Seriously, after the year Orlando's had, I would love to have the chance to show him that his real friends still care about him and support him. Even if you don't like me, please give some thought to attending. This is for Orli and I know he would love to see you all there.

Okay, let me know what you think about having it away from the house because it would be really hard to surprise him otherwise. But I could rent out a restaurant or hall or something. Something in between semi-formal and casual. Suit jackets and open shirt collars, no jeans, that sort of thing. I'd kind of like a royal/winter/fairy tale theme/decor but nothing cheesy and juvenile. Classy, elegant, beautiful, whimsical and fun - all the things he is. Open bar, DJ (or band? Thoughts?), buffet, huge cake (I've been calling around for both those things already), cabs to take home any drunk people and... I'm sure I'm going to think of more things! But so far, that's been my brainstorming. I might just hire a party planner because if I'm doing too much running around, he might suspect something.

Hmmm... Well, there are a few perks to being in the restaurant business, so here's what I can help with:

I know a lot of restaurant owners in New York, so that can be provided without a problem. Open bar would be fine and, if you need the catering, the food can be provided, too. My cousin's husband (who's my business associate) has had a lot of restaurant openings, so I can ask for a suggestion on a party planner?

The theme sounds good! I like it. Hmm... I don't know about the DJ or band, though. Maybe a DJ so there can be a bit of everything?

Michael, you rock the Casbah!! Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated and most likely run with! *grins*

I think a DJ, too. I have a friend who has a band, so maybe they could perform a few songs, but for general dancing, a DJ would probably be the easiest bet.
