Topic 108: Letter to anyone

Written by Will, age 9

Dear God,

How are you? I am fine. Mom told me that I should pray to you because you answer prayers. I pray every night. So far, you haven't answered them. I think that my prayers have been getting lost. I am writing this letter because you might get this instead.

Please make Dad nicer. I don't know why I make him mad but he yells at me. I try to be good but I think I still mess up. Please help me stop messing up so much. Dad always says he wants a real son when he thinks I can't hear him. I don't know what is not real about me, but could you please fix it?

I love my dad. Please make him love me, too. Please make Mom smile more. She smiles when the two of us are together but when Dad gets home, she stops.

Please bless Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa Porter, Granny Fae, Grampa Lou, Uncle Scooter, Mrs. Kaufman, the president, Mork, Jerry, Toby, Troy, and all the other boys in my class. Mom says I should bless the girls even if I don't like them. You are a boy. I think you understand.

In conclusion, please let me get a dog.

Yours truly,
William T. Porter

Did you ever get a dog?

Not until I got married and had a house of my own. My dad hated dogs.

I'm more of a cat person myself, but I'm glad you got a dog eventually!

Me too. *smiles* Unfortunately, they're both with my ex-wife, now, so I'm thinking about getting another one. Or maybe I'll get a cat. I like cats. Maybe I can get one of each.

I got a cat, or rather the cat got me, last autumn, but then I went away on holiday and when I came back Pussyfoot had moved in with my sister. Which was a pity because he was very good at keeping one's feet warm. However, Yarrow is home, so I doubt if I'll suffer from cold feet.

*grins* Yeah, I think boyfriends are much better at feet warming.

Did your Dad ever come around?

No offense, but he kinda sounds like a jerk. More his problem for not appreciating his son than anything you could have done.

No offense taken. *smile*

Dad was Dad. He had certain ideas about what he wanted in a son and I didn't live up to his standards. It's for the best that he was dead when I finally came out.

Hmmm, perhaps he didn't live up to his own standards. Sounds like you tried hard to be what your Dad wanted you to be when really he should have been encouraging you to be who you were.

Sorry, it's not really any of my business. *smile*

Nah, that's okay. I've kind of thought this stuff to myself, but it's nice to see an objective point of view. Especially when it agrees with mine. *grin*
