Sending something to Orlando
Will frowned as he put the package in the mailbox. He hoped Orlando wouldn't find it too lame that he'd made him a mix CD. Two mix CDs, actually. Hopefully he'd accept them in the spirit they were made and not make too much fun. Kevin had usually sneered at Will's attempts at romance, thinking he was the only one who had the corner on that market. Still, Orli was different and even if he teased, Will knew he'd love every second.
The package contained two CDs in slim jewel boxes, along with the song listings, lyrics and a handwritten letter from Will:
O-
You've inspired me to do something I haven't done for anyone else (since college). You, my love, are getting not one, but two CDs from me, filled with songs that remind me of you and us and our situation in one way or another. I even got a little ambitious and made them an A to Z rendering of my feelings for you in song. :-) Mind you, it's extremely hard to find good X and Z songs, so... You can feel free to skip those.
I shared the first CD with Pete, and after he finished laughing and making fun, he proceeded to tell me I am officially the gayest man in the world. Maybe I am, so consider that your warning. I can admit there's a lot of sap there, but you know what? I can't help it and sometimes I just don't want to help it. I think about you and I want to say every romantic thing I can because I adore you. I love you, and all kidding aside, my sentiments are genuine.
Of course, Pete's little jab (actually, it was a very large, pointed stab filled with mocking laughter) did inspire me to make CD No. 2. Now, before you listen to it, place your tongue firmly in your cheek. That's where mine was when I was picking out the songs. I want to think about you laughing when you hear some of these because I love your laugh and... Well, I love your laugh and your smile and the fact that you can appreciate my goofy side.
By the way, I did resist the urge to make these all showtunes. I should get kudos for that. ;-)
Love,
W
CD Number One:
At Last - Etta James
- "You smiled and then the spell was cast." Yup, that pretty much sums it up.
Being With You - Smokey Robinson
- I told Pete that "friends and relations" part was indeed aimed at him.
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
- I've loved this song ever since you told me about it. I can't hear it without thinking of you.
Dreams - The Cranberries
- You're a dream to me.
Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye - Annie Lennox
- I miss you.
From This Moment On - Shania Twain & Bryan White
- Pete says this is a wedding song and I shouldn't include it. I just think it's pretty and says a lot that I want to say to you.
Get Here - Oleta Adams
- I really miss you when I listen to this.
Hooked On A Feeling - Vonda Shepard
- I had to. I used to be an "Ally McBeal" fan. Should I admit that?
I Cross My Heart - George Strait
- Okay, this involves a story about sitting down and catching a movie with Mom. Anyway, since you have that thing for cowboys, I had to include this sweet love song from a movie starring a cowboy.
Just The Two Of Us - Bill Withers
- I've always thought this was a pretty song. And sometimes it feels like it is just the two of us.
Kiss From A Rose - Seal
- I don't think this song is about cocaine, as rumored. But I do think of you as an addiction. I have absolutely no interest in seeking treatment for it. :-)
A Love That Will Never Grow Old - Emylou Harris
- From one of my favorite soundtracks ("Brokeback Mountain"). Depending on the day, it can bring tears to my eyes.
Make Someone Happy - Seal
- I was so happy to find a version that said "him" instead of "her."
Night And Day - U2
- One of my favorite standards but I do love this version.
Only The Ones We Love - Tanita Tikaram
- Another pretty song.
Perfect From The Start - Jeremy Toback
- I might be biased, but we were SO perfect from the start.
Quando, Quando, Quando - Michael Buble
- I think this guy has a sexy voice and he happens to sing a 'Q' song! Plus, if you want to risk it, I'd love to dance to this with you.
Recipe For Love - Harry Connick, Jr.
- I was 17 the first time I heard this song, and I thought it was lame. Now, I think it's kind of cute.
Sea Of Love - The Honeydrippers
- This song makes me think of you and want to hold your hand. And walk on the beach.
Thinkin' About You - Trisha Yearwood
- I'm not ashamed to like country music. And it's true. I can't stop thinking about you.
Underneath Your Clothes - Shakira
- "There's the man I chose, there's my territory." Yep.
Vision Of Love - Mariah Carey
- This one makes me want to slow dance with you.
What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? - Chris Botti, featuring Sting
- Fair question, I think :-) Plus, Sting is guh. Almost as guh as you.
Xanadu - Party Animals
- Feel free to skip this, but I needed an X. At least I found a dancey remake instead of the original! Though I do like that part about me and you and "party of two."
Your Body Is A Wonderland - John Mayer
- Truer words were never spoken... Or sung.
Zebra - John Butler Trio
- I don't like too many 'Z' songs, but I like this one. You're going to eventually see every side of me and this just kind of appealed to me in a 'putting it all out there' way.
CD Number Two (Don't forget that you CANNOT take these too seriously. Except for the sweet ones. A couple snuck on there.):
All Day Long I Think About Sex - JC Chasez
- Hey, how'd this get on here...?
Brown-eyed Handsome Man - Chuck Berry
- The title speaks for itself.
Come On Closer - Jem
- I think this one's kinda hot.
Dirrty - Christina Aguilera
- Couldn't resist, didn't try.
Englishman In New York - Sting
- Hee!
Freeway Of Love - Aretha Franklin
- I think we need to take a road trip.
Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine - James Brown
- The Godfather of Soul. Always straight to the point.
Hair - Treat Williams
- God, I love your hair.
In Bloom - Nirvana
- Picked for the title because I'm that big a dork. Plus, it sounds like a nice place to be.
Justify My Love - Madonna
- Sweetie, you don't need to justify anything. I just really like that first verse.
Kielbasa - Tenacious D
- I really don't think I need to explain this one. I laughed my ass off the first time I heard it.
Like A Virgin - Madonna
- *giggles*
Macho Man - Village People
- How could people not know these guys were gay?
Notorious - Duran Duran
- Inspired by those stupid rags. Let's laugh at them, shall we?
Over The Rainbow - Wonderful World - Israel Kamakawiwo Ole'
- There were so many reasons to pick this, the least of which is it makes me happy when I hear it. I hope it does the same for you.
Physical - Olivia Newton-John
- Baby, I hope you know that picking these sex songs was done in fun and NOT what I think we're all about.
Quiche Lorraine - B-52s
- The gayest song about a dog, EVER.
Route 66 - Natalie Cole
- Picking up the road trip theme...
She Hates Me - Puddle of Mudd
- The first time Peter played this song for me, it was when I was having a really bad day because of the divorce. I wasn't amused at first, but then he made me take two shots of Jack and dance in my living room with him. By the time the song ended, I was laughing my ass off. Sweetheart, I propose some dance therapy to salute the ladies we can dedicate this song to.
Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
- It's true, you know. It will be all right. I refuse to let it be anything else.
Under The Boardwalk - The Drifters
- "On a blanket with my baby..." I really love this song.
Vultures - John Mayer
- I didn't pick this one because it's silly or fun and leave it at that.
Walking On Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
- Had to pick another happy song!
X Files (instrumental) - Mark Snow
- Just because there's so much weirdness lurking around us!
You Can Sleep While I Drive - Trisha Yearwood
- Okay, maybe this can count as sap. But I choose to think of it as a road trip song, too.
Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah - James Baskett
- I actually found myself whistling this in the shower the other day.

He's overwhelmed. No one has ever done anything like this for him before, and he has no idea how to respond.
