Drabblemania topic: Politics
The two men were sitting at the breakfast table, having a little something to eat and reading the paper before they started their day.
"I don't understand how anyone can be a Republican."
Will lowered the newspaper and looked over it at his boyfriend. "How come?"
Kevin shook his head, scowling at something he was reading in his section of the paper. "They're intolerant bigots who want to take away all of our personal freedoms."
Cringing a little, Will picked up his coffee and took a sip. "What about Democrats?"
"In their own way, they're the same," Kevin shrugged. "Anyone who's hardcore anything is going to be intolerant of anything that doesn't match their beliefs. That's why I'm an Independent."
Will nodded and hid behind his paper again, being conspicuously silent.
"Sweetheart?" Kevin asked slowly. "Is there something you need to tell me?"
The paper stayed up. "I don't know, do I?"
"You're being awfully quiet."
"I..." Wincing a little, Will put the paper all the way down. "I'm a registered Republican. I didn't know you felt that way about them."
There was no other reaction than a nod. "Why are you one?"
"Because my dad was one."
"And what was your dad like?"
Will tilted his head. "You know what my dad was like."
Kevin nodded and smiled at his lover. "I do, and you're nothing like him. You think for yourself and you're a fair, loving individual."
"So you're not mad?"
A slight look of shock flickered across Kevin's face, and he got up from his seat. "Why would I be mad?"
"Because I'm..." He shrugged.
"You're William Porter," Kevin said softly, standing behind Will's chair and leaning down to wrap his arms around him, "and I'm crazy about you. I apologize for throwing out a blanket statement like that earlier. I love you, Will, and I'd never be mad at you for having a different point of view."
Will put a hand over Kevin's arm and tilted his head up for a kiss. "And you're not mad that I followed my father like that?"
Kevin shook his head and touched his lips to Will's. "He's your dad, sweetheart. You can do anything you want with regards to him. Besides, I have a feeling that while you might share a party with him, you don't share the same views."
"Yeah?" Will's face lit up. "How can you be so sure?"
Pressing his lips to Will's ear, Kevin giggled. "You're a big flaming queer for one."
A grin and a nod, and Will raised a hand to Kevin's hair. "Well, yeah, there's that."
"And that's a pretty big thing." Kevin chuckled and nuzzled Will's ear. "But that's just my opinion."
"That's not the only difference between me and my dad, you know."
Kevin's arms tightened around Will, and he sighed softly. "I know, baby. Being a good human being has nothing to do with politics."
"And vice versa," Will laughed softly. "Can I make a confession?"
"Another one? I don't know if my heart can take it," Kevin teased, now nibbling on Will's earlobe. "Go ahead."
"I haven't voted since 1996."
Kevin started laughing. He couldn't help it. "How come?"
"That's the last time I was interested in anything approaching politics. And I sort of got swept up in the Bill Clinton machine."
"But you're not a Democrat."
"I don't think it really mattered back then. Remember the good old days when the country wasn't so divided along party lines? When you voted for the man and the issues, not the letter after his name?"
"I vaguely remember things not being as divided and bitter as they are now, but I really think that you are in the minority when it comes to voting the issues and not the party, sweetheart." His arms tightened around Will, and he kissed the top of his lover's head. "And that's exactly why I'd never be mad at you for the way you identify yourself. You're pretty brilliant, too, and that's something a lot of voters are lacking."
"Now you're just trying to flatter me," Will giggled.
"Is it working?"
Will paused for a few moments, then nodded. "Yep. You know what else?"
"What?"
Turning in his chair, Will pulled Kevin down for a long, deep kiss, finally letting him go with a soft sigh. "I never realized talking about politics could feel like foreplay."

I feel that once people get to a certain point, all politicians are the same, so there is no point in my rallying for or against anyone if I can't believe in them.
And sex is much more fun than worrying about politics.

Dent, huh? That sounds pretty bad. *grins*
