The dog walked, the coffee brewed, and the Sunday paper read, Will was ready to call his best friend and catch him up on the latest developments in his life. The main thing he wanted to talk to Peter about was his new boyfriend, Kevin. In a way, he wanted his friend's blessing, even though he knew that he didn't need it.

Settled on the couch, Will dialed his friend's number and waited for him to pick up.

"Hey, Will," Peter answered as he always did, thanks to caller ID.

"Hey, Pete," Will said, smiling at the sound of his friend's voice. "How's it going?"

"Not too bad. I was beginning to think you'd fallen off the face of the earth, though."

Will frowned. "Why?"

"I haven't heard from you in a while, that's all."

"Well, get this, man. They've recently discovered that phone lines go both ways. I know it's a scary thought, but--"

"Okay, smartass," Peter laughed. "Point taken. But you know I don't want you to think I'm checking up on you."

"How about any time you miss me, you call me, okay?"

"All right, that'll work," Peter said, and Will could hear the smile in his voice. "So, tell me what's been keeping you so busy."

"I was sick for a few days, took some time off work."

"Aww, how're you feeling now?"

"I'm good. Kevin took care of me."

"Kevin?"

"I told you about him."

"Oh, right, the cop. You're still seeing him?"

Another frown. "I am. In fact, we're getting kind of serious, I think."

There was a long pause before Peter spoke again. When he did, he sounded a little less amused. "Already? It's only been a couple of weeks, hasn't it?"

"Four weeks on Friday." Will had an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach. "We went out for dinner. Oh, and he gave me a puppy. His name's Wendell and he's--"

"Wow, a dog? Already? You barely know the guy and he's giving you a pet? Next thing you'll be telling me is he's moving in."

Will blinked at the tone of Peter's voice. He sounded so harsh, it had taken Will by surprise.

"What's wrong?" Will asked softly.

"Nothing," Peter said quickly. "I just think it's a little odd. What do you know about this guy?"

"Enough to know that I care a lot about him. And we have actually started talking about moving in together. He's been practically living here for the past week, so--"

"Look, helping you when you're sick is completely different from living with you. Don't be stupid, Will."

Now, Peter was sounding mean, and Will hadn't heard him sounding that way since the fight they had over Talia being told about the affair. Will hadn't wanted to be honest and Peter had thought she deserved to know the truth about who her husband really was. It had turned out that Peter had been right, but Will didn't think he was right in this case.

"Peter," he said, keeping his voice even, "I'm not sure what I've done--"

"You haven't done anything," Peter sighed. "Look, I have to go. I've got...stuff to do. I'll call you later, okay?"

This time, when Peter hung up without saying goodbye, it didn't feel as if it was because of their ritual of not saying that word to each other. It felt as if Peter had just hung up on him.
