I should gather my ghost hunting equipment (night vision camera and digital voice recorder) and visit Aidan. I do believe in this stuff, but, you know, don't want to sound like a total crazy person by admitting it without any proof.

Then again, scratch that. If I do end up seeing something, I might freak out and think our house is haunted.

A ghost. As in spooky spirits. I've never felt anything, but that doesn't mean much.

I can't believe. It's... It doesn't make any sense for ghosts to exist.

Why does it make no sense to you, melar? I have seen shades, the Men of The White Mountain were quite real, I assure you.

If I believe people are reincarnated, wouldn't that mean that ghosts are just souls without homes, in a way? That doesn't seem right.

I believe weithrin are those foresworn in life, barred from Valar's Hall and doomed to wander.

Do Elves have a concept of Hell?

For us one is either gathered to Valar's Hall or not. Elves have no belief in eternal punishment.

*nods* There are some who believe that any place that isn't Heaven is Hell and that Hell doesn't necessarily have to be fire, brimstone and devils with pitchforks. This reminds me of that.

I think I was getting hung up on the notion that anyone bad enough to be denied Heaven would go to Hell, and anyone with unfinished business would be reincarnated. No room for ghosts. It never occurred to me that the souls not granted access to whichever form of paradise one believes exists could wander as spirits if they have no reason or have been denied the chance to come back in another life.

It is not needful that the weithrin be 'bad', merely that their oaths be unfulfilled. It is, I believe, why Estel does not return, both his oaths and his destiny have been fulfilled, he is free to remain at peace.

I wonder how someone knows if they're fulfilling all their duties. Are they literal oaths? Or just things that should be accomplished during their lives? What if I never do that and never get to be at peace?

Sorry. I worry about things.

It would be a literal oath unfulfilled. I do not think you should worry overmuch, mellon, for I do not see you being such as those who would fail to keep your word, save that fate prevent it and that I do not believe would leave a weithrin.

Would breaking my marriage vows count against me, you think?

From what I know of your marriage, you took the vows for the sake of the child that was to be and held those vows as best you could until you found you could not and remain true to yourself. Is this how it was?

Yeah, that's pretty much it in a nutshell.

And when you broke that vow was it still a true marriage to either you or your lady wife, or merely an appearance for form's sake?

*little smile* It was definitely not a true marriage anymore.

Then I do not believe you would be foresworn, for that vow takes two to keep it true and if both have failed then to me neither would be foresworn, for the heart cannot be contained.

I wish you could have been with me when I was going through my divorce. I could have used your wisdom then, melar.
