Topic 119: Did you ever intentionally make a complete fool out of yourself, etc.?
Picture it. Sicily. 1934. A young village girl is going out to milk the family goat...
Sorry. Went a little "Golden Girls" for a second there.
Okay.
Picture it. A freshman dorm at the University of Georgia. Young Will Porter has gotten it into his head that the only way to get Claire Berger to notice him is to serenade her under her dorm room window. Now, the fact that Will can't sing (and that it's one in the morning) doesn't matter at all to our young Romeo. All he knows is that Ione Skye fell in love with John Cusack after he blasted "In Your Eyes" at her. Since his boombox is on the fritz, Will has no choice but to sing, a cappella, a song that he's been assured is a personal favorite of Miss Berger's.
"I never needed love... like I need you... I never cared for nobody, like I care for you... Ooh, babe... lost in love is what I feel... when I'm with you.."
Of course, by this time, the friends who are with him are laughing their asses off, but he doesn't care. If not for the liquid courage they supplied him with, he wouldn't be standing there doing that. They are truly great friends.
"Maybe it's the way you touch me, with the warmth of the sun... Maybe it's the way you smile, I come all undone... Ooh, babe... lost in love is what I feel... when I'm with you..."
To be honest, the most touching they've done is when they both reached for the same textbook at the bookstore and his hand brushed against hers. But he really does like her smile.
"Baby... I get chills when I'm with you... ohhhhhhhh, baby... the world stands still when I'm with you..."
Success! A light goes on and the window is opened, along with a few others so everyone can see who the singing fool is. Someone peers out of Claire's window, and Will waves up at her.
"Will?"
"Claire!"
There's a slight pause, then a lot of giggling.
"Sorry, Will." It's Claire's roommate, Sally. "Claire went home for the weekend. But I'll tell her you called."
"Oh... Sorry!"
"It's okay." She sticks her head out of the window a little more. "You can keep singing."
Sally and Will ended up dating for about two months.
