Summary: A little late night snacking.

It was late for a work day; almost two in the morning. Will had been up working on a report his boss had assigned at the last possible moment and expected first thing in the morning. It was finally finished, and as a reward, Will decided to treat himself to a little late night snack.

His dog, Lani, had stayed with him in his study while he crunched the numbers he needed in order to get his work done. Jake, a Jack Russell terrier far too smart for his own good, had decided going up to the master bedroom with Talia a few hours ago was a much better idea than sitting around with his master. Will was sure that when he got upstairs, Jake would be on his pillow and he'd have to deal with moving a cranky dog if he wanted to get in bed. Maybe he'd just crash on the couch.

But, first things first, he thought, making his way to the kitchen, enjoying the dark and quiet of the house. Lani, a big brown and black German Shepherd-Collie mix, padded alongside his master, perhaps hoping for a little snack of his own. Sure enough, the first thing Will did when he got to the fridge was reach up for the bag of doggie treats they kept on top of it.

"Here you go, buddy," he said softly, feeding the dog and bending down to kiss the top of the animal's head. "You love Daddy more than Mommy, don't you? You're a good boy," he grinned, scratching Lani behind the ears when he wagged his tail enthusiastically and seemed to smile at him in that way that dogs had.

The dog seen to, Will once again focused on his snack. If he was going to eat this late, he wanted to make it something worthwhile. He was always careful about what he ate, but every now and then he'd allow himself to indulge a little. This was going to be one of those times.

Opening the fridge door and casting some light into the dark kitchen, Will smiled when he saw exactly what he was looking for. There, in the middle of everything else, was a piece of Devil's Food Cake that he'd passed up at dinner so he could work on that damn report. Now, he would be allowed the luxury of being alone with the dessert, to savor every last crumb without having to stop and talk to his wife. Rich desserts were a rare thing in the house, so when they did make an appearance, Will usually tried to make the most of them.

As he pulled the plate from the fridge, the light made the plastic wrap the cake was in sparkle, and Will wasn't quite convinced that he didn't hear angels singing. The door to the fridge closed and he waited a few moments to let his eyes readjust to the darkness before taking a fork out of the cultlery drawer and making his way over to the breakfast table. The plate was held in front of him, his reverence for this particular piece of culinary delight quite obvious to his only witness, if the wagging tail was any indication.

"It's too bad chocolate'll kill you, boy," Will said to his pet, setting down the plate and taking a seat. "You'll just have to take my word for it that this is a piece of heaven."

With that, Will took the fork and cut into the cake, his mouth watering in anticipation. The first taste was perfection, and he closed his eyes, moaning softly as the sweetness and rich chocolate filled his senses. He considered getting a glass of milk to go with it, but he wanted a few more bites before he interrupted their little tryst.

A few more bites soon became a lot more bites, and then the plate was empty. Sitting back, patting his stomach, a satisfied smile on his face, Will finally decided to get that milk and then see about getting some sleep. Just as he got up, though, the light was turned on and Talia was standing in the doorway of the kitchen.

"You're still up, honey?" she asked, her squint mirroring her husband's.

"Yeah, I finishd the report and decided to treat myself."

"Me too," she said, smiling as she opened the fridge. After a few minutes, she closed it and turned to Will, eyes focusing on the empty plate in front of him.

"You ate that whole piece?"

He nodded and stood up. "Yup. It was better than sex. I'm going to have some milk now."

She crossed her arms in front of her chest. "Will, that was for both of us."

"I thought you had your piece after dinner."

"No, I said that if you weren't going to have any, I'd save it for later and split it then. I wish you'd listen to me when I talk."

He actually started to feel a little guilty, wondering how he could have missed something like that. He wasn't selfish and if he'd known that Talia wanted some, he never would have eaten the whole thing.

"I'm sorry, honey. I can buy you--" He stopped when something occurred to him. "Wait a minute. You were going to come down here and eat it, yourself. There wasn't going to be any waiting to split it later."

The flash of guilt he saw on her face made him laugh, and he pointed a finger at her. When she cracked a smile, he knew the jig was up.

"Nice try, evil woman. Guess I beat you to it."

She laughed, then. "Guess you did." Moving over to him, she slipped her arms around his waist and kissed him. "Did you really think it was better than sex?"

"Yeah, didn't you?"

There was a pause, then she nodded. "Yeah. Guess that doesn't say a whole lot about our sex life."

Will grinned as they headed out of the kitchen and turned off the light. "Actually, I think it just means that was a hell of a cake."
