The lodge where Kevin and Will were staying had an attached gift shop that the both of them had been reluctant to visit until their last day there. It was as if they knew that the purchasing of a few souvenirs meant their already too short trip to the falls was coming to an end. Still, as Will browsed through some books about the area and Kevin looked at some sweatshirts and hats, they made the most of every moment, sneaking glances at each other, commenting on what was available and promising that they'd do this again as soon as they could.

Finally, when each man had everything he was ready to buy, they got in line to pay and show off their finds to one another.

Still jealous you're in California and I'm in Georgia. Doesn't feel right without you here. When I want to tell you something, I can't. Being poor sucks when you can't afford a long distance call. Miss you.

There was never enough room on the postcard for Will to say everything he wanted. Probably just as well. He wasn't sure if being away at school made him miss his friend so much, or if it was feelings he couldn't quite accept yet. Whichever, he was counting down to spring break and the chance to see his best friend again.

The tear-stained face turned upward, and big blue eyes stared up at his mother.

"Was it because I was bad?"

Inez Porter knelt down and hugged her son. "No, baby, it wasn't because you were bad," she whispered.

"Then why did Peanut die?"

She kissed his cheek and drew back, taking hold of his little hand. It broke her heart to have to explain to a four-year old why the family goldfish was no longer swimming around in his bowl.

"He died because it was his time," she said. "It had nothing to do with anything you or I or Daddy did."

"Did it hurt?"

"No, sweetheart, it didn't hurt."

"How do you know?"

She smiled. Good question. "Because when I found him, he had a smile on his face."

Will's eyes widened. "He did?"

"Uh huh. And now he's in a better place."

The boy's lips pursed, his brow furrowed and he looked at the little Whitman's Sampler box in his hand that was serving as his goldfish's coffin.

"Okay," he said, looking a little confused.

"I mean heaven, sweetie," Inez said, keeping a straight face. "He's with God, now."

Will paused, nodded and raised his eyes to his mother, again. "Guess God needed a fish more than we did."

This time Inez did smile. "Maybe He did."

"That's okay, I guess." The little boy shrugged and put the box on the ground, ready for it to be buried. "But I wish He'd asked first."

Will finished checking his email, debated surfing for a little porn, then finally shut off his computer and went to his bedroom. He was getting used to living in a much smaller space than the house in Connecticut. Still, at least it was a condo and not some pathetic studio/bachelor unit with a community bathroom. If Talia kept up trying to drain him dry, that could quickly become a reality, though.

He sighed, feeling depressed, a little overly dramatic and completely homesick as he thought about his mother, his best friend and his dogs.

"I'll take 'things I miss most' for three hundred, Alex," he said aloud.
